But the dream didn't quite live up to the hype. Coutinho admits he never quite hit the heights expected of him at the Catalan giants. Now, he's with Vasco da Gama, and he's looking back on his journey.
"We had loads of talks about staying or leaving. I really wanted to move to Barcelona," he says. "The first six months were great. We won a title, and I was playing well. But after the World Cup, things changed. I wasn't in the same shape, and my performances dipped."
Coutinho admits it was a tough time, but he leaned on his family and faith to stay strong. After a loan spell at Bayern Munich, he's now on loan at Aston Villa.
"I have no regrets," he says, speaking to Premier League Stories. "I needed to change teams. I wasn't in Barcelona's plans anymore. I needed to play, and go to a club that wanted me."
"Steven Gerrard called me. We talked, and we saw there was a possibility to go to Aston Villa. It was great, but things didn't happen as we expected."
"I had this dream to play for Barcelona. The opportunity presented itself, and I couldn't say no to my dream."
"So, I have no regrets about everything I experienced, all the places I've been. I gave my all, was very professional, and tried to do my best. It worked out well at some clubs, while not so much at others. But that's football. I don't have any regrets, only thanks and gratitude for every club I've been at."
