Atletico Madrid, who recently suffered a 4-0 defeat in the Club World Cup, are reportedly closer than ever to signing Romero. The club's manager, Diego Simeone, has expressed his admiration for the Argentine player.
“Do I want Cuti Romero? Obviously! He’s a great player!”, Simeone said. Romero's current contract with Spurs has two years left, and he has been open about his desire to play in La Liga.
“I’d love to play La Liga. I’d love to, honestly. It depends on a lot of things. We’ll see after the (English) championship is over. The truth is, I haven’t spoken to my agent yet, but I’m open to anything. My goal is always to grow and go to new places to continue developing,” Romero said.
The transfer situation is complex, with Spurs reportedly demanding £60m for Romero, while Atletico were only willing to pay £40m. However, with Romero's contract expiring soon, new manager Thomas Frank may have to consider a lower price to avoid a player dispute.
